SPECIAL NOTICE – Back to School Plan

Mt. Calvary Lutheran School

The Mt Calvary Re-Opening Plan for the 2020-21 school year incorporates Health Orders Guidelines from the County and State, gives consideration of MCL Grade Level Enrollment, and our Curricular and Programmatic Operations

As we move forward, our guidelines when approval is granted, for a return to school by the State of California or local Health Agency are as follows:

Classroom  While each classroom has their own set of learning objectives, unique to their grade level that are developmentally appropriate academically, socially, and spiritually, each of our classrooms will adhere to the following standards:

  1. socially distant arrangements of desks
  2. proper social distancing will be practiced between students and teachers at all times of the school day
  3. cloth facemasks will be worn by students, grades 3 and up,  into the classroom at the beginning of the day in the morning, and worn the entire day, except when eating or drinking
  4. child will need to provide their own cloth facemasks and have at least one spare with them at school in case it needs to be replaced for some reason
  5. cloth facemasks or face shields will be worn by teachers in the classroom during upfront instruction and other direct encounters with students 
  6. facemasks with printed designs must be in good taste
  7. temperature checks will occur every morning for staff and for students as they arrive, anyone registering 100.4 or higher will be sent home to be monitored by parents
  8. no parent visitors allowed in classrooms, unless specifically approved by the administration and the teacher, and for a limited time only
  9. teachers will monitor student health and well-being all day long, and report any concerns to the MCL office for needed action
  10. students will follow hand sanitizing and handwashing procedures as outlined by each classroom teacher for each classroom/grade level
  11. no classroom food functions allowed; i.e. theme parties, birthday treats, special events—anything that brings in prepared food from the outside or prepares shared food for the students
  12. treats for students can be brought to class for special occasions, but must be commercially prepared, sealed and individually wrapped
  13. classroom doors and windows will be kept open as much as possible to allow for ventilation of fresh air
  14. regular cleaning and sanitizing will take place every night in every classroom by our professional cleaning service using upgraded cleansing material
  15. desks will be sanitized by staff at the end of each school day
  16. each classroom may create a more detailed specific set of health and safety rules for use within their room

Morning Recess Procedures for Grades K-5 will occur in the following rotation in the places by each grade, visiting each station once a week.

  1. Area A: Blacktop Station 1 – near the container, basketball, hopscotch, and 4 square
  2. Area B:  Blacktop Station 2 – in the area of the basketball hoop and bench
  3. Area C:  Swings and the Sand area near Pavilion – swings will be sprayed and washed following use by each student before another student is allowed on the swing, no pushing of students by other students
  4. Area D:  Wall Area of Field – students will be able to play solo with a ball and enjoy other field activities
  5. Area E:  Softball Diamond Area – students will be allowed to enjoy individual play on the grass and kick a soccer ball in this area of the field
  6. Each class will have their own playground equipment that will be used only by them and will be sanitized and cleaned following each use
  7. All classes will practice proper social distancing as they travel to/from their designated play area
  8. There will be no use of the Ga-Ga Ball Pit, the Climbing Structure and Slides, or the Drinking Fountain
  9. 5th Grade will take their recess at a later time than the younger grades and be the only class on the field or blacktop play area during their recess time

Restroom Procedures

    1. limited to no more than 3 students in a restroom at any one time
    2. following recess use restroom visits will be supervised by teachers to limited contact with other classes and a large group of students
    3. restrooms will be monitored and cleaned following use by class groups
    4. students will wash their hands thoroughly following the use of the restroom
    5. use of sanitizer will occur by all students when they get back in the classroom following trips to the restroom is required
    6. no students allowed in MCL Office restrooms during the day, unless their class is using the gym
    7. restrooms will be thoroughly cleaned every evening by our professional cleaning squad, using enhanced cleaning materials and supplies
    8. the drinking fountains will not be available for use, except for the “refill” feature on the drinking fountain in the MCL office
    9. students are expected to bring their own personal water bottle for use during the day

 

Student Drop-off Procedures 

  1. students in grades K-2 will be dropped off in the “normal” drop off lane area  on the east side of campus that we have used for years at MCL
  2. students in grades 3-4-5 will be dropped off in the upper lot area which has been normally used for afternoon pick-up
  3. only parents of K, 1 & 2 students will be allowed to park on the east side of campus and walk their student across to the temperature check station
  4. temperature checks will be taken of all students by a staff member as they exit their vehicles and before they enter campus

Student Pick-up Procedures 

  1. parents will pick up their child(ren) in the same designated spot where they dropped them off in the morning 
  2. students will be grouped by family units and wait together, keeping a proper social distance from one another
  3. all students will wear facemasks as will parents when they are outside of their car or speaking to staff from inside their car
  4. staff, wearing facemasks will supervise and direct children to vehicles
  5. only parents of K, 1 & 2 students will be allowed to park on the east side of campus and accompany their child(ren) from the Quad area back to their vehicles, keeping a proper social distance from other children and parents

Lunch Service and Supervision   whenever possible, lunch will be eaten outside at MCL with the following guidelines: 

  1. seating will be limited to 3 students per 8’ and 6’ tables
  2. seats will be assigned by each teacher/lunch monitor
  3. a schedule of “shifts will be created for Grades K-5 so that the seating area will not exceed 36 at any time at the lunch table area
  4. students ordering hot lunch will receive their lunch in the kitchen service line, monitored by staff, keeping a safe social distance while in line 
  5. when a parent or family member brings a “late lunch” to school, they will drop it off in the MCL Office entryway cart prior to the child’s scheduled lunchtime
  6. no outside “lunch service” is allowed (i.e. uber eats, doordash, etc) this will help keep foot traffic and outside visitors to a minimum on our campus
  7. all staff and students will practice proper social distancing going to/from lunch

Lunch Recess Procedures for Grades K-4 will occur in a rotation in the following places by each grade, visiting each station once a week.

  9. Grade 5 will have their own separate schedule for lunch and use of the play areas following lunch

MCL Office  The Mt Calvary School Secretary will operate behind a sheet of plexiglass, and wearing a face mask in the office for her safety and the safety of others. Those visiting the office  will adhere to the following procedures:

  1. limit of one visitor at a time to see the School Secretary 
  2. only essential visits by children during the school day
  3. only essential visits by adults to the office, appointments preferred
  4. visit time kept to a minimum, no lingering socialization allowed
  5. no special treats or snacks supplied for public consumption by visitors or staff will be allowed in the office area
  6. staff and visitors will wear face shields and masks while in the MCL office
  7. proper social distancing will be practiced by all who visit the office
  8. families will be required to register for “Simply Giving” so that automatic payments can be withdrawn from their account for tuition and fees, thus reducing the need for office visits

Use of Gym and Library and Computer Room   

  1. scheduled and used by one class at a time
  2. regular cleaning of the surface areas following use by a class in the library and computer room
  3. regular cleaning of the gym by our professional cleaning service

Chapel  

  1. due to restrictions on worship gatherings, Chapel will not be held in the gym as it usually occurs
  2. until restrictions for worship gatherings are lifted, we will plan for a live broadcast of chapel from the MCL sanctuary to classrooms (and to homes) via our Youtube channel

Technology  

  1. use of personal devices brought to school by students is encouraged
  2. all personal devices will need to be inspected and approved for use at MCL  by our Director of Technology
  3. headphones will be assigned to the same user in a classroom for the entire school year—personal headphones brought to school is welcomed
  4. laptops will also be assigned to the same user in a class for the year 
  5. all devices will be wiped clean following each use

SAC (School Aged Care)

  1. temperature checks of all children and staff will occur every morning as students arrive
  2. students will wear masks as they arrive in the morning and for the afternoon session and wear them at all times while in SAC
  3. snacks served in SAC must be commercially prepared, sealed and individually wrapped
  4. social distancing will be practiced at all times 
  5. staff will wear masks or face shields when encountering students close up during homework sessions and game playing
  6. afterschool homework and socialization will practice proper social distancing
  7. hand sanitizer will be used by parents before using the check-in and check-out device

Sports Teams    

  1. our sports team will not compete until the COVID-19 restrictions are lifted and it is safe for our students to compete 

PTL Activities  

  1. Family functions and social activities will be canceled until county and state orders for group events are lifted
  2. only on-line fundraisers will be allowed (i.e. the Read-a-thon)

Switching to Online Instruction   Should we have to return to on-line delivery of education, Mt Calvary will:

  1. Provide live instruction from teachers via online platforms such as Google Classroom and Zoom that present our curriculum as if students were in a regular classroom setting.
  2. Teachers will create and publish a weekly schedule for their classroom and deliver it to parents and students so that there are clear expectations about school work and on-line requirements.  
  3. A “safe contact” system of delivery for “hard copy” work will be developed for younger students who will need to turn in written work and receive assignments that are printed out.  
  4. On-line attendance will be taken daily and follow-up will occur if students are missing from class sessions.
  5. Make computer devices available to families on loan who need one for their child or who needed additional devices due to multiple children in the home.

Parent and Family Communication   During this pandemic, it is vital that the MCL office is informed of any health care situation regarding a student that could affect students, staff, and others in the Mt Calvary community.  If there are any issues that need to be shared in confidence with Office Staff, please call and inform us.  We ask that parents and families self-monitor their health situations every day and if there are any Covid-19 symptoms to call your Doctor and seek to get tested if needed.  We ask that parents and other adults in the home continue to communicate and educate their children regarding proper social behavior and safe personal hygiene during this Covid-19 crisis. 

  1. We would ask that you communicate with us in the MCL office regarding:
  2. health care updates concerning your children and immediate family
  3. important health care concerns with your extended family members
  4. health care updates related to work situations or your close circle of friends

If Someone in the MCL Community Tests Positive for Covid-19

  1. if a student or staff member tests positive they will not be allowed at school and will be required to quarantine for 14 days and be symptom-free, and have two (2) negative tests before returning to school
  2. the MCL community will notify other potentially exposed students and employees (we will not share names and anonymity will be maintained)
  3. if a member of a staff member or student member’s family or close circle of friends tests positive, the student/staff member must quarantine for 14 days and test negative before returning to Mt Calvary
  4. confidentiality of anyone, or anyone’s family member testing positive will be maintained by the MCL administration and staff
